Letter to an Unknown Mother chronicles an abandoned son’s quest to find his unknown mother, and the images and sounds that linger in the mind during that journey towards closure. At the end of Im Kwon-taek’s masterpiece Gilsoddeum we are reminded that no matter what, Koreans cannot deny that they are one people of the same blood. Throughout the film we travel to Japan, Portugal and Spain but no matter where one flees to in this world, the blood ties connecting mother and son, Korean to Korean, can never be broken, for better or worse.
